Bambu A1 vs P1S: Open Frame or Enclosure?

The $360 question is a materials question

The Bambu Lab A1 ($339) and P1S ($699) are the two most-recommended printers in the hobby, they come from the same company, and they print at the same very-fast speed class. The gap between them is not quality, speed, or reliability. It's a box.

The P1S is enclosed. The A1 is not. That single difference decides which materials each machine can print cleanly — and that should decide which one you buy.

What the enclosure actually does

ABS and ASA shrink meaningfully as they cool. On an open frame, the part's lower layers cool and contract while upper layers are still being laid down hot, and the stress peels corners off the bed — the classic warp. An enclosure traps the heat radiating off the 90–100°C bed, holding the air around the part warm enough that it cools slowly and evenly after the print finishes.

That's the entire trick. It's also why no firmware update or glue stick fully rescues ABS on an A1: the physics happens in the air, not on the bed. Buy the A1 if…

  • Your material plan is PLA, PETG, and TPU. That covers toys, organizers, cosplay, miniatures, planters, brackets, and the large majority of functional prints. The A1 does all of it cleanly — see PLA vs PETG for which to default to.
  • You'd rather spend the $360 on filament. That's roughly 18 spools of PLA, which is a year of regular printing.
  • Multi-color tempts you. A1 + AMS lite lands near the P1S's base price with four-color capability.

Buy the P1S if…

  • ASA outdoor parts or ABS functional parts are anywhere in your plans. Buying the A1 first means buying twice; the upgrade path between these two machines is a sale listing.
  • You print in a cold garage or workshop. The chamber stabilizes conditions even for PETG when ambient temperature swings.
  • You want carbon-fiber filament someday. Both need the hardened nozzle swap, but the P1S's chamber covers CF-nylon blends the A1 can't hold flat.

Noise, placement, and the stuff spec sheets skip

Two practical differences don't show up in the table. Placement: the A1 is a bed-slinger — the bed itself moves forward and back, which means the printer needs clearance front and rear and transmits more motion to the desk. The P1S moves its head, not its bed, so it sits happily on a shelf flush against a wall. In a small apartment this matters more than most specs. Noise: both are audible at full speed; the P1S's enclosure takes the edge off, which is worth knowing if the printer lives where you sleep or work on calls.

There's also the matter of fumes. PLA and PETG are mild, but ABS and ASA emit styrene-family odors that you genuinely do not want circulating in living space. The P1S's chamber concentrates them — crack a window or vent it. This isn't a reason to pick either machine; it's a reason to plan where the enclosed one lives before the first ABS spool arrives.

Total cost of the two paths

Run the two-year math before deciding. Path one: A1 at $339, plus a dryer and starter spools, lands around $450 all-in, printing PLA/PETG/TPU forever. Path two: P1S at $699 with the same accessories lands near $810 and adds the ABS/ASA/chamber column of the matrix. The $360 delta is the entire decision — and if you buy the A1 then later need a chamber, you'll spend the $699 anyway and recover maybe half the A1's price used. Material certainty is worth real money here; uncertainty argues for the cheaper machine and a year of finding out what you actually print.

The verdict

Buy the A1 if you can't name the ABS or ASA part you plan to print. Most people can't, and the A1 plus $360 of filament beats an enclosure guarding empty air.

Notice what stays constant across all three brackets: nobody should pay for a chamber they won't heat, and nobody who needs a chamber should buy a machine without one. The bracket changes; the materials logic doesn't. Run your own intended spools through the matrix and the answer usually writes itself before the budget does.

Living with each machine

Maintenance differs less than the frames suggest. Both want the same boring routine: keep the build plate clean (warm water and dish soap beats IPA for PEI plates over time), watch for debris in the extruder path, and store filament dry — a dryer serves either machine identically. The P1S adds chamber-specific chores: wipe the enclosure panels, and when printing PLA leave the door open or the top glass off so heat doesn't soften the part or creep up the hotend. The A1's exposed format makes every maintenance task slightly easier to see and reach, which is a genuine quality-of-life difference for new owners; the P1S asks you to work through a door. Neither machine needs the weekly wrench sessions that defined the hobby's earlier era — that, more than speed, is what the current generation actually changed.

Can the A1 print ABS at all?

It will extrude it, but parts beyond small trinkets warp and crack without a chamber. We mark it not recommended in the matrix — buy enclosed for ABS rather than fighting physics.

Is the P1S worth it for PLA-only printing?

No. For PLA and PETG the A1 produces equivalent parts at the same speed class for $360 less. The P1S earns its price only when the chamber gets used.

Do both work with multi-color?
