Until recently, a sub-$300 printer was a kit, a project, and a gamble. That era is over. The current budget tier includes genuinely automated machines, and the buying question has shifted from "which compromise hurts least" to "which kind of printer do you want": small and automated, bigger and manual-ish, or middle-ground and tweakable.
Three machines define the tier. All three print PLA and PETG cleanly; none has an enclosure, so ABS and ASA are off the table across the board — at this price, that trade is universal and the matrix confirms it.

Best overall: Bambu A1 mini ($199)
The A1 mini brings flagship automation — self-running calibration, tuned slicer profiles, very-fast speeds — to the tier's floor price. Prints succeed on the first try, which at this price used to be science fiction. The cost is build volume: 180mm cubed covers most practical printing (organizers, miniatures, brackets, toys) but rules out helmets and large single-piece props. Best build volume per dollar: Ender 3 V3 SE ($199)
The Ender 3 V3 SE gives you 220×220×250mm — meaningfully bigger than the mini — plus the most modified, documented, community-supported platform in the hobby's history. Auto-leveling removed the worst of the classic Ender pain. What remains is the bed-slinger format at a standard speed class, more manual filament handling, and a machine that rewards (and occasionally requires) attention. Choose it deliberately: for learning printer mechanics, for the build volume, or for the mod culture — not because it's the famous name. The direct matchup is Ender vs A1 mini.
Best middle path: Elegoo Neptune 4 Pro ($300)
The Neptune 4 Pro buys the tier's biggest volume (225×225×265) and a fast speed class for $300 — quicker than the Ender, roomier than the mini, cheaper than the full-size A1 at $339. It's the value tinkerer's pick: more capable hardware than the Ender with the same open, adjustable spirit. The honest caveat is that at $300 you're one Tuesday sale away from the A1, whose automation and ecosystem clear this whole tier; if your budget flexes 13%, the comparison becomes about a different machine entirely.
What you give up under $300 — and what you don't
You give up: enclosures (no ABS/ASA/PC), stock hardened nozzles (CF filaments need a swap where supported), multi-color in the box, and some long-run refinement. You don't give up: print quality on PLA/PETG — a well-running budget machine lays the same plastic as a flagship; dimensional parts; or the core hobby experience. The tier's real tax is time and attention, and the A1 mini's automation is precisely a refusal to pay that tax.
Budget one more line item regardless of pick: filament behaves the same at every price, which means moisture ruins it at every price. A $70 dryer and a starter spool of PLA complete any of these machines.
Three buyers, three answers
The student in a dorm. Space is the constraint, not ambition. The A1 mini wins on footprint, noise discipline, and the fact that prints just work between classes — a printer that needs babysitting doesn't survive a semester. The 180mm volume handles every dorm-scale object that matters.
The parent buying a family machine. The deciding question is who maintains it. If the honest answer is "nobody," the A1 mini's automation is the feature you're really buying — it's the difference between a hobby and a guilt object on a shelf. If a teenager wants to understand the machine, the Ender 3 V3 SE plus its bottomless mod community is a legitimate education; just budget the patience.
The hobbyist who already knows they're hooked. Skip the tier. Seriously — the A1 at $339 makes every machine here a compromise you'll feel within six months, and the full-size volume plus AMS-lite path covers the growth most committed hobbyists actually experience. The budget tier exists for testing the waters; if the waters are already tested, buy once.
The used-market alternative at this price
A patient buyer can find last-generation machines used at this tier — but the math rarely favors it for first printers. A used machine arrives with worn nozzles, mystery firmware, and zero warranty; its previous owner's tuning knowledge leaves with them. The exception: a used machine from a known fleet (a school or makerspace selling maintained units) can be excellent value. The rule: if you can't yet diagnose a printer, buy one that hasn't developed problems to diagnose. Spend the savings on a dryer and fresh spools instead — consumables, unlike printers, are always worth buying cheap and fresh.

Not reliably — ABS needs an enclosed chamber, and this tier doesn't have one. Stick to PLA, PETG, and TPU; the matrix shows each machine's clean list.
Is the A1 mini's small bed a real problem?
For most people, no: the large majority of functional prints fit 180mm. Measure your most ambitious planned print before deciding — it's the one spec you can't upgrade later.
Are sub-$200 printers from unknown brands worth it?
