The Plate Is a Tool, Not an Accessory
Build plates sit in a weird spot in the upgrade conversation. They're consumables-adjacent, they're heavily marketed, and every brand sells a drawer's worth of variants — gold PEI, carbon-coated, "nano-textured," holographic. Strip the marketing away and the hobbyist decision is almost always between exactly two surfaces: textured PEI and smooth PEI. Everything else is a niche tool or a novelty.

Textured PEI: The Default for a Reason
Textured (powder-coated) PEI is the sheet that ships on most modern printers, and it earned that spot. The texture does three jobs at once:
- PLA grips it reliably when the plate is clean and warm — first layers stick without glue, parts pop off when cool.
- The matte, lightly stippled bottom surface hides the usual first-layer sins: slight elephant's foot, minor over-squish, the shiny squish-lines a smooth plate would showcase.
- Release is mechanical. Flex the plate, the part pops. The texture reduces contact area, so even grippy materials let go.
The matte bottom finish is a genuine aesthetic position, not a compromise — for functional parts, brackets, and anything that sits texture-side-down, it reads as intentional. The weakness: because contact area is reduced, materials or parts with marginal bed adhesion (small footprints, tall skinny towers) hold on less tenaciously than they would on smooth. Clean the plate with IPA, keep fingerprints off it, and most of that weakness never shows up.
Smooth PEI: Gloss, With a Catch
Smooth PEI sheets produce a near-mirror, glossy bottom surface. For display pieces, logo plates, lithophane frames, anything where the bottom face is a visible face, smooth PEI delivers a finish texture simply can't.
The catch comes with PETG. PETG bonds aggressively to smooth PEI — commonly too well. Adhesion that strong stops being a feature: parts can fuse to the surface firmly enough that removal risks tearing chunks out of the PEI coating itself. The standard, well-established practice is to apply a thin layer of glue stick as a release layer — not to make PETG stick, but to keep it removable. It feels backwards the first time, and it works.
PLA on smooth PEI behaves nicely: strong adhesion warm, clean release cool, glossy bottoms. A well-tuned first layer on smooth PEI with something like Bambu PLA Basic is one of those small satisfactions this hobby occasionally hands you.

A pattern worth noticing: textured PEI is the safe answer in every row. Buying a Plate When Every Brand Looks the Same
Plate listings are a swamp of identical-looking products, and unlike printers, there's rarely meaningful review signal separating them. So buy on verifiable criteria instead of brand mystique:
- Exact size match for your printer — not "close." A plate that overhangs or undersizes the bed is a daily annoyance.
- Spring steel base with magnetic mounting — the flex-to-release mechanism is the whole point of modern plates.
- Actual PEI, stated plainly. "PEI powder-coated spring steel" or "smooth PEI film" are the phrases you want. Vague "platform sticker" listings are usually bare steel or generic films.
- Double-sided is a bonus — textured one side, smooth the other is a space-efficient way to own both surfaces.
- Commodity pricing. Plates are commodity items. Pay commodity prices.
First-party plates from your printer's manufacturer cost a bit more and remove the size-guessing; third-party plates meeting the criteria above are generally fine. For printers with large user bases — an A1-class machine like the Bambu A1, for instance — compatible plates are abundant and cheap, which is one of the quiet perks of buying a popular printer.
Plate Care: The Boring Stuff That Prevents Failures
Most "adhesion died" complaints are fingerprints. Skin oil is an excellent release agent, which is great news for your fingerprints and terrible news for your first layer.
- Wipe with high-concentration IPA between print sessions; handle plates by the edges.
- Wash with dish soap and warm water when IPA stops restoring grip — soap removes the residue film IPA just smears around.
- For PETG on smooth: reapply the glue release layer after washing. The glue is sacrificial; the PEI is not.
- Don't scrape with metal on coated surfaces unless you've accepted the scratch.
- Let plates cool before flexing stubborn parts off — thermal contraction does half the removal work for free.
A textured PEI sheet treated this way lasts years. The upgrade path isn't a fancier plate; it's a clean one.
FAQ
Do I need both a textured and a smooth PEI plate?
Need? No. A clean textured plate handles PLA, PETG, TPU, and ABS competently, which is why it's the factory default on most machines. Buy a smooth plate when you have a concrete reason: glossy bottom surfaces on display parts. As a second plate it's a nice-to-have; as a first plate it's the harder-to-live-with choice because of PETG's bonding behavior.
Why is my PETG stuck to my smooth PEI plate?
Because PETG bonds to smooth PEI extremely well — well enough to damage the coating on removal. This is expected behavior, not a defect. The fix is preventive: a thin glue-stick layer on smooth PEI before PETG prints acts as a release layer. For the stuck part you have now: let the plate cool completely, flex gently, and be patient rather than forceful.
How do I clean a PEI build plate properly?
Routine: wipe with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol while handling the plate by its edges. Deep clean: warm water and a drop of dish soap, rinse, dry — this removes the oil film IPA eventually stops cutting through. If a textured plate has genuinely lost grip after years of use and proper cleaning, the coating is worn and the plate has reached the end of its consumable life.
Does a textured plate affect the accuracy of the bottom surface?
The texture imprints on the bottom face, which can matter if your part's bottom is a precision mating surface — the stippling slightly changes how that face seats against other parts.
