Every accessory roundup in this hobby reads like a dropshipping catalog: twenty-five items, all "essential," half of them variations of the same silicone scraper. We hold gear to a simpler standard: does it earn permanent bench space by preventing failures or saving real time, on most printers, for most makers?

Five things pass. A long list of popular purchases doesn't. Here are both lists, with reasons — because the reasoning is the part you can reuse next time a gadget shows up in your feed. (For how we evaluate gear generally, see the methodology page.)

1. A Filament Dryer

The single highest-leverage accessory in the hobby. Wet filament causes stringing, popping, weak layers, and rough surfaces — and people routinely lose weekends blaming slicer settings for what's actually moisture. A dual-spool unit in the Sunlu S2's class (~$70) both recovers wet spools and lets you print directly from the dry box. One or two rescued spools of PETG and it has paid for itself; the avoided troubleshooting is the real return. If you print only PLA in a dry climate, this drops to "eventually" — for everyone else it's first on the list for a reason.

2. A Hardened Steel Nozzle Kit

Conditional, but cheap enough to keep on the list: the day you print carbon-fiber or glow-in-the-dark filament through brass, the nozzle starts dying. A hardened steel nozzle kit at $15–30 means that day costs you a five-minute swap instead of a worn, out-of-round orifice and a week of mystery under-extrusion. Buy it when your first abrasive spool goes in the cart — same order, ideally. Until that day, the brass your printer shipped with is genuinely the better nozzle for plain materials, since steel gives up a little thermal conductivity. 3. Isopropyl Alcohol, 91% or Higher

The least glamorous item here and arguably the most-used. Fingerprint oils are an excellent release agent, which is precisely what you don't want between your first layer and the plate. A quick IPA wipe before printing is the difference between "adhesion is solved" and a slow drift toward mystery first-layer failures. Buy the high-concentration stuff from any pharmacy or hardware store; lower concentrations leave more water behind and cut grease less effectively. No brand matters. A bottle and a stack of lint-free wipes — that's the entire system.

4. A Deburring Tool

The cheapest quality-of-life upgrade on the bench. A swivel-blade deburring tool — the same generic tool machinists have used forever — cleans elephant's foot off bottom edges, chamfers holes so bolts seat properly, and erases brim scars in seconds. The alternative is a hobby knife and a nonzero chance of blood. Any ~$10 unit with replaceable blades is fine; this is a commodity tool and brand chasing is wasted effort.

5. Digital Calipers

The tool that turns printing from vibes into numbers. Flow calibration, measuring real hole diameters against designed ones, checking filament diameter on suspect spools, designing parts that actually fit around real objects — all caliper work. A $20–30 digital pair with a metal body and a zero button is plenty — FDM printing can't use precision beyond what that class of tool measures. The only ones to avoid are the flexy all-plastic units, which can't hold a reading.

The pattern in the cut list: most of it sells convenience for problems you don't have yet, or solves a problem the short list already solved better. Sealed storage bins with desiccant are the honorable mention that almost made the list — cheap, and they genuinely slow moisture absorption — but the dryer covers the recovery job they can't, which is the job that matters.

  1. IPA + deburring tool + calipers — under $50 total, useful from day one.
  2. Filament dryer — the moment PETG, TPU, or humidity enters your life.
  3. Hardened nozzle kit — the same day your first abrasive spool does.

Everything else: wait until a real failure or a real bottleneck names the tool for you. The bench has limited space, and empty space on it is worth more than the average accessory.

One habit makes this ordering work: keep a short note — physical or digital — of failures and friction points as they happen. When the same annoyance shows up three times, that's a purchase with evidence behind it. When a gadget shows up in your feed and isn't on the list, it can wait. FAQ

What accessories do I actually need on day one with a new printer?

Less than the bundles suggest. High-concentration IPA for plate cleaning, calipers if you'll print functional parts, and a deburring tool for finishing — under $50 combined. Your printer ships with the wrenches and scrapers it needs. Add the dryer when moisture-sensitive materials arrive, and the hardened nozzle when abrasives do. Everything else can wait for a real problem.

Is a filament dryer really more important than an enclosure?

For most people, yes. Moisture affects every hygroscopic filament on every printer in most climates — a near-universal failure source. Enclosures matter only for ABS, ASA, and similar warp-prone materials; if you print PLA and PETG, an enclosure does roughly nothing for you. Universal problem beats niche problem.

Are expensive name-brand calipers worth it for 3D printing?

No. Premium metrology brands exist for machinists working at tolerances FDM printers can't approach. A $20–30 digital caliper with a metal body and a zero button measures everything a printer can produce. Spend the difference on filament. The only calipers to avoid are the flexy all-plastic ones, which can't hold a reading.

Why aren't glue sticks on the essential list?

Because for most setups they solve a problem that plate hygiene already solves. Clean textured PEI grips PLA and PETG without help. The legitimate use is the inverse: on smooth PEI, a thin glue layer acts as a release film so PETG doesn't bond destructively to the plate. That's a niche, plate-specific job — worth a glue stick in the drawer, not "essential" status.
